Solico Metal, a Cenmax Group company, has received the Sustainability Award at the CISC/ICCA BC Region Awards of Excellence in Steel Construction 2026, presented by the Canadian Institute of Steel Construction. Solico was first named a finalist in April.
The award recognizes a structural steel retrofit of an existing warehouse and office facility in Surrey, British Columbia, completed for Garcha Bros Meat Shop & Poultry.
Reinforce rather than replace
The project added tilt-up concrete walls and a suspended slab to the existing building. Rather than demolish and rebuild, the team designed a custom structural steel solution that increased the building's capacity and adapted it to current operations. The facility stayed in use throughout construction.
Solico fabricated the steel in its Calgary shop. Components were shipped to Surrey and installed by a local erection crew.
Practical sustainability
Reusing an existing structure avoids much of the material, energy and disruption of a new build. In industrial construction, sustainability often comes down to practical choices like this one.
Solico thanks Garcha Bros Meat Shop & Poultry, BMP Engineering & Inspection Inc. and the full project team, and CISC for the recognition.
Headquartered in Calgary, Alberta, Cenmax Group is an industrial holding group building a vertically integrated steel ecosystem for the construction and industrial sectors.
